How can I use nmap to find devices outside the network?

I'm familiar with scanning my local network using nmap, for example, with the command nmap -sP 172.10.14.1/24. However, I'm interested in discovering devices outside my network. What tools and commands should I use to scan for online devices beyond my local network? How can I determine the appropriate IP range to scan, and what methods can I employ to identify these ranges? should I scan my public ip range? Any guidance or examples would be greatly appreciated!
