Best-practices on the handling of managed and private Microsoft/Apple accounts

In a professional context, users would ideally have a company-provided computers, company-provided smartphone (if needed) and managed Microsoft/Apple accounts. Then all is good. They can benefit from the Apple/Microsoft sync goodness between their devices; and it is segregated from their private life.

In my my case, the company was a startup so no-one cared and everyone was/is using their private accounts everywhere (don't even think we had a MDM solution somewhere in the mix).

I'm not quite sure if what I described above is the best practice or if there's another way, especially with BYOD right around the corner, and all my colleagues now used to the seamless integration between their company laptops and personal smartphones.

Are there other means that I don't know of to handle this managed/private accounts problem?
