What were the coolest things in security school?
This will probably be deleted, but what the hell.
Every single project was cool. Yes, there was drawing up contingency plans for the datacenter. Writing equipment search warrants that were valid in your own state was pretty cool. Make sure you take the keyboard for any password macros!
But we also got to learn Where people hide stuff in the structures of different file systems, and crawl through virtual bad-guy computers to ransack their transactions.
We got to dissect a professionally-written government virus and admire its modularity and how it viciously seized control and communicated only with the very lowest level hardware.
I wrote a paper analyzing my Algonquin ancestors’ crude smoke signal system as a wide-area digital network, with all the attributes of such networks.
The assignment was to find out everything you can about someone (anyone) from publicly available information. My presentation was everything about porn star Ava Taylor. A studio filmed a video in her apartment. The studio is in Miami. You can see the river, the piers, and her building’s usually shaped pool. That’s all it took to get her address, floor plan, apartment number, and other stuff.
Ran a time limited copy of the expensive, restricted software that law enforcement uses to recognize and catalog porn; then let it find all the porn on your own PC. That was actually an assignment. We all laughed heartily about it on the forum because we all had porn, and it found it.
Grad school here in The Future was pretty cool — almost as fun as college was.
