How dangerous is it to Google my password? [duplicate]
I have heard numerous, numerous times that Googling your password to anything (like is Pass124 a good password), is a very bad idea- and surprisingly there is no question (that I could find) on this site asking why this is.
Some points I have considered:
- Over HTTPS something like a MITM attack isn’t a threat.
And assuming I’m doing the sensible thing by going incognito or using a private window over a reliable VPN,
In a private window no people using my computer (or malware) will be able to view my search history.
Because I am incognito, my email or IP address isn’t linked to the logs in the server, so even in the extremely unlikely event of a data breach (4) it may be added to a dictionary but I won’t be targeted specifically.
Google is one of the biggest companies in the world so a data breach seems very unlikely, and in the small, small chance of a breach not only would attackers have other priorities but it would take years to sort through that many Google searches.
So unless Google themselves are not trustworthy and add an anonymous “is this a good password” search to a dictionary, I don’t see why this is such a ‘bad’ thing to do.
Even though I have thought a lot about it, I am probably the one missing something as I lack experience in this topic.
And I’m not saying that “just incase” isn’t a good reason- there are many sources that explain what a good or bad password is, so I don’t see any reason someone would want to do this, but still.
So security se, why is it dangerous to Google my password, in incognito, over a VPN?
