Likelihood of attackers using the webcam of a compromised machine [closed]

This is something I’m wondering but just can’t figure out.

A lot of my somewhat older relatives have pieces of tape over their laptop cameras, and when I asked them why, their somewhat open ended response was “so hackers can’t see me.”

And the funny thing is, one of my work laptops, that is pretty new, has a little slider to cover up the camera, too.

For your average person, is attackers spying on people through their cameras:

  • Likely?, and if so,

  • What would be the point of this?

Because personally, a ‘hacker’ can feel free to gaze at me as much as I want- I don’t care! It’s too easy to find pictures of people online, anyway.

As for my “threat model”, this isn’t a question for some wanted or undercover person, this is just your average guy- no one of specific target.

Note: I am not asking how likely it would be for an attacker to ‘hack in.’ I am asking if an attacker was already in, how likely would they be to spy on me, and why?
