Salvageable computer parts after being hacked

(edited) My question main is much pretty where can malware hide after it's infected your computer and what parts should I keep and throw away to make sure the infection no longer spreads. Does factory resetting your router help? I have Verizon router that updates it's firmware automatically so is that I guarantee that as long as I reset the router soon enough it can't get infected?

My reason for asking so much is I was just hacked and I believe the way I was hacked was via malware coming from a 360 controller that was used previously to play games on a previous infected PC and that it's the only old component that I have reused from that particular. Is a controller getting infected even feasible? because so seem to say it possible and some that it functions to differently to have malware stored on it.

Last if malware is really hiding in places my a antivirus can't detect and formatting or bios flashing can't do anything help what's the next course of action other scraping the whole PC?
